Penang - From 15-17 October 2019, UN-Habitat, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia-Pacific (ESCAP) and Urbanice Malaysia will convene the region’s largest multi-stakeholder event on urban issues. The Seventh Asia-Pacific Urban Forum (APUF-7) will take place in the City of Penang, Malaysia.

Held four months before the Tenth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF10), APUF-7 will be a key opportunity to discuss and review progress towards the implementation of the New Urban Agenda at the regional level and to accelerate implementation of sustainable urban development to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other global agreements such as the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

APUF-7 will provide insights into future-proofed urbanization solutions and engage urban stakeholders and policy-makers from national governments, financial institutions, development partners, civil society, professionals, academia, private sector and individuals to debate and promote innovative solutions to the region’s most critical urban challenges.

As one of the outcomes, APUF-7 will register voluntary commitments to increase concrete investments and impactful initiatives for the implementation of sustainable urban development at the local, national and regional levels. APUF-7 Voluntary Commitments will provide key inputs to UN-Habitat’s New Urban Agenda Platform to be launched in WUF10 and reflect initiatives that implement the transformative commitments of the New Urban Agenda.

The theme of APUF-7 will be “Future of Asia and Pacific Cities: Transformative Pathways to Achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. More than 3,000 participants are expected to attend the Forum.

APUF-7 will also be the venue to launch The Future of Asia-Pacific Cities Report 2019 developed by ESCAP and UN-Habitat with the European Union, the Asian Development Bank, The Rockefeller Foundation, UNDP, Singapore’s Centre for Livable Cities and many others.

Based on the Report’s focus, the four main thematic tracks to be addressed in APUF-7 are: Urban and Territorial Planning; Data and Technologies for Smart Cities; Urban Resilience; Urban Finance. Additional thematic areas and sectoral topics will also be featured throughout the Forum.
