EU provides €6 million to make vulnerable cities resilient to disasters

04 July 2016, Geneva – The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) aim to reduce disaster losses in some of the world’s most hazard prone cities with the initial aid of a €6 million grant from the EU, over the next three years. Mr. Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development said: ”Strengthening disaster risk governance is an essential part of sustainable development and a key priority of the Sendai Framework.

Youth organisations benefit from training in Nepal

Kathmandu 24 March 2016-- The UN-Habitat Urban Youth Fund in collaboration with HANDS International, a national non-profit organization in Nepal last week conducted a Youth Fund Management training and workshop for youth-led organizations in Kathmandu. Nepal, 21 January, 2016 - Every 16 January, Nepal commemorates the mega-earthquake of 1934 by having the Earthquake Safety Day. This year’s event saw the launching of the National Reconstruction Authority, which will oversee the reconstruction campaign in the wake of the 25 April 2015 earthquake.

Community Information Center formally opened in Nepal’s Sindhupalchowk district_2Sindhupalchowk , Nepal 25 September 2015-- The Community Information Center (CIC) was officially opened to the public last week at Sipapokhare Village Development Committee (VDC) of Sindhupalchowk district, some 66 kilometers from Kathmandu. One more such CIC is also established at Irkhu VDC of the same district.

Kathmandu Valley, Nepal: Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment

UN-Habitat’s Cities and Climate Change Initiative promotes enhanced climate change mitigation and adaptation in developing country cities. This document is an initial output of the Cities and Climate Change Initiative activities in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. This abridged report is based on the report titled: “Kathmandu Valley, Nepal – Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment”. Starting with a brief background of the Kathmandu Valley, this report addresses the climate change situation from a comprehensive vulnerability perspective that focuses on exposure to climate change hazards, socio-economic sensitivities and the adaptive capacities of the city and its stakeholders. Based on this analysis the report identifies vulnerable people, places and sectors.

Supporting communities in Nepal

Kathmandu, 3 August 2015 – Martha Ramtel, 41, who lost her husband fifteen years ago and also lost her father, who has been assisting her since then, during the devastating earthquake in April this year, comes from a Dalit family in Dumin Danda village, in Sindhupalchowk district, Nepal. Living with her four small children she works as a labourer and also sells buffalo leather as raw material to local entrepreneurs. The food grain she produces is only sufficient for three months in a year.
