Waste Wise Cities Challenge

It all started with 20 cities, 2 years and 1 goal: to clean up and establish the foundations for sustainable waste management

We are bringing together cities that are looking to improve the management of their municipal solid waste management (Changemaker Cities) with mentor cities (Supporter Cities) committed to share their good practices and expertise.

Sustainable management of Solid Waste is important if cities are to be clean, green and inclusive”  Andre Dzikus Chief, Urban Basic Services Section, UN-Habitat

In addition to facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing, UN-Habitat provides training on the Waste Wise Cities Tool, a methodology for rapidly assessing a city's solid waste management system and report on waste SDGs indicators.
After applying the tool and consolidating collected and existing data, Changemaker Cities identify in a participatory approach intervention areas and infrstructure gaps. Assisted by their Supporter Cities and UN-Habitat, the Changemaker Cities then develop project proposals.

The following cities have expressed their commitment to tackle their solid waste management challenges by applying to be a “Changemaker City”. However, there is a shortage of the mentoring “Supporter Cities” , therefore we invite cities to be part of the Challenge as “Supporter Cities”. Have a look at the candidates and their profile and let us know at WasteWiseCities@un.org if you want to support one of them!
